Downingtown Music Parents Association is proud to host the Cavalcade of Bands marching band competition at Kottmeyer Stadium on Saturday night, September 28, 2019. Approximately a dozen bands will perform to earn regional recognition for excellence in musical performance, marching precision, flag/guard performance and drumline. In addition to the competition among some of the top area high schools marching bands, Towson State will execute its unique half-time show for the enjoyment of the audience.
As hosts of the Downingtown Cavalcade of Bands, East and West High School bands will perform as exhibitors to showcase their 2019 marching band halftime show. Both bands are regionally recognized as outstanding marching band competition performers. Each of the Downingtown school’s halftime performance highlights precision movement and outstanding musical talent. Over 100 students in each band work together as a team to execute intricate marching patterns while performing challenging musical compositions. Even though the East and West bands work together to represent Downingtown during parades, they are focused competitors on field.
“Downingtown has been hosting the Cavalcade of Bands for years. Not only is it a fund-raising activity for the bands and all the music programs (chorus, orchestra and band at West, East and STEM), it is also a wonderful community event. We have people from throughout the region come to the Cavalcade because they were in one of our bands years ago, or they want to encourage their young kids to consider band as they grow up through the Downingtown school system.” says life-long Downingtown resident and long-time band director, Ed Otto. The commitment to encouraging music in the school district includes the offer that elementary and middle school students can attend the event for free (with the purchase of an adult ticket – no unaccompanied elementary/middle school students permitted.) “We do this to help make it easy for families to attend, and to expose younger students to the excitement that is competitive marching band. Plus it’s a lot of fun!”
Definitely a family-friendly event, the concession stands will be open during the Cavalcade. Serving hamburgers/hot dogs/French fries/snacks/drinks, the proceeds of the concession stands support the Music Parents Association (MPA). “The Cavalcade of Bands is one of the MPA’s biggest fundraising events every year,” says MPA President, Frank Chindemi. “The funds generated through this event and concessions sales during the football season turn right back around to help support the music programs (band/orchestra/chorus) from all three high schools (West/East/STEM).” Chindemi continues, “Over the years, we have been able to purchase uniforms and risers for the choral program, repair or replace instruments for band and orchestra students, and provide several music-related educational opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise. Budgets are tight, and the parent volunteers and community support during events like this go a long way to build the music programs.”
With research continuing to show the importance of music education for cognitive and social development, it’s no wonder Downingtown Area School District continues to provide its support to the music programs. The entire region is invited to attend the Cavalcade of Bands to encourage the students of our music programs and to enjoy some award-winning marching band performances!
Cavalcade of Bands will be at Kottmeyer Stadium at West High School of Saturday September 28. Gates open at 4pm and the music starts at approximately 5pm. Tickets for the Cavalcade of Bands are available at the gate ($15 for adults, $8 senior citizens/veterans, and $5 for children under 10 – Elementary or middle school music students can get in free using the flyer provided by their music teacher.)
